Analyse af 'A Simple Exchange of Niceties'

The short story “A Simple Exchange of Niceties” is about a young woman who is a little wild, she is on parole. And she is going to have an abortion, because she got pregnant after a one-night stand.

The short story is centered on the bench in the park by the leg, where the narrator likes to be, it is a quiet and peaceful place, and ducks are swimming around in the leg. I think she likes to be there, because it is so much different than the life she earlier had, she has been shoplifting and had some crazy nights out, which have resulted in pregnancy, and now she is ready to turn her life around. The story takes place within the last couple of years, the way to see that is the fact, that she can have an abortion, and it is really not a very big deal to her, that she is going to have it, where it for some years ago would be outrageous.

Our narrator is the main character in the story, we don´t know her name, but she is young, and she does not have a good relationship to her mother.

The main character is pregnant, and she doesn´t want to keep it, because she isn´t ready to be a mother, but still when she smokes, she thinks, that it can´t be good for the baby, so I think that already in the start of her pregnancy, she has doubt about getting an abortion.
