In 1981 drummer Lars Ulrich sent an advertisement into the newspaper: `` The Recycler´´. Guitarist James Hetfield read that paper then he needed a band. He saw the paper and contacted Lars. They played for a while, but James was not impressed over Lars’ drum play, but he went better after some time. They needed a bass player and James best friend Ron Mcovney couldn’t play the bass. But James insisted that he would be in the band. He thought him a bit and they played together. They found another guitarist, named Dave Mustaine. They didn’t really care for him, but he was a good guitarist. One of Lars’s friends, wanted to create a Heavy metal magazine, and needed a name for it. One day Lars and his friend tried to figure out a name. The friend suggested the Name “Metallica” and Lars knew that it should be the name of his band. He suggested another name for the magazine, and took the name Metallica himself. Metallica played in a lot of clubs in 1982, while they to wrote the songs. For there first show ever, they only had one song they had wrote themselves, it was “Hit the lights”. Once in the end of 1982, James and Lars sat in a club and listened to a band. Suddenly they heard a weird guitar-solar, and looked towards the stage. They already then knew that they wanted that bassist in there band! His name was Cliff Burton. They quickly got Ron (James best friend) thrown out of the band, and got Cliff to join them instead. Cliff only joined on one condition: that they would move to San Francisco, were he lived. The 5. March 1983 Cliff Burton played his first concert with Metallica. Later that month the band went to New York, to record there first album "Kill 'Em All". Dave Mustaine had alcohol and drug-addiction problems, and he was still a clown. So the first of April 1983 they got the guitarist Kirk Hamlett in the band, 9. April that same year Dave plays his last show with Metallica. 10. to 27. May, Metallica records "Kill 'Em All", and later they go on there first Tour: "Kill 'Em All for one". 19. of January 1984 Metallicas equipment got stolen, and when they had no money, they almost banded the band. Luckily they didn’t do that, but it inspired them to the song “Fade to black”. 20. February 1984, they start to record there second album, "Ride The Lightning" In “I sweet silence studio” in Copenhagen in Denmark. 2. September 1985 the recording of Metallicas third album starts, “Master of puppets”. Again it’s in Copenhagen. When the band id driving to a show, around 6 o’clock in the morning, 27. of September 1986. The driver off the bus, were Cliff is sleeping in, hits some ice and the bus tips over. – Cliff Burton is killed instantly. The band would like to stop playing, but they know that Cliff wouldn’t have wanted them to do so, just because he’s dead. After 40. Auditions, Metallica chose Jason Newsted as there new bassist. That happens 28. Of October, four days later Jason plays his first show with Metallica. To remember Cliff on the 4. of December they publish the video “Cliff em all”, with old concert tapes and interviews (prøv at finde videoen på youtube). Cliff 'Em All gets gold very fast. 6. of December 1988, Metallica records the first video to the song ”one”. In January 1990 Metallica queens records “stone cold crazy” for Elektras (there record company) 40 years anniversary cd. The rest of the year passes on writing songs for there next album. In 1991 the record the album and publishes it the same year. It gets published the 12. of August. The Album doesn’t have a name but is called “The black album” because the cover is almost entirely black. In 1992 they win a Grammy for best Heavy Metal album. In August the same year James gets burned by a flame on stage, and rumors says, that Metallica is disbanded. 1993 goes with touring. In 1996 James gets his hair cut! In the start of June, Metallicas 6. Album, “load” published. This is a big change, if you compare it to the other albums. The songs are softer, and more like music you would hear in the radio. 21. and 22. of April Metallica plays along with the classical orchestra of San Francisco, and later that year the publishes a Cd and video with the concerts. They play two other shows with other classical orchestras that year. The year of 2000 goes with touring and doing radio shows. But in 2001 17. Of January it happens Jason Newsted leaves Metallica. Of the reason of the damages he has done to himself in the 14 years he have been in Metallica, another reason was that he only had help write 3 songs in the 14 years he have been in the band, and he missed creative freedom. In September 2008, they published the cd ” Death Magnetic”.
