Last week my class and I saw a movie about the apartheid in South Africa. The movie was released in 2007 and it’s directed by the Danish guy, Bille August. In the movie we’re following James Gregory and his family. His family contains of James, Gloria and their two children. James grew up on a cotton farm in Transkei, where he learned to talk Xhosa. As a kid his best friend was black and called Bafana, but he doesn’t want to remember that because he`s ashamed.

James gets a job as a prison guard on Robben Island. His job is to watch Nelson Mandela and translate the Xhosa language when he’s talking with his wife. The Gregory family is a bit poor and his wife is very focused on promotion for Gregory and she’s making up for the boss’s wives. Slowly Gregory is turning from a racist to an open-minded guy who doesn’t judge people from their color, religion or their past. And that’s something the other guys on the island aren’t enthusiastic about. The life isn’t that good on the island so they’re asking if they can get moved to another prison and the authorities accept their request.

Gregory is the only guard that the prisoners haven’t complaint about. Then he gets moved again, and this time they are moved to a very nice place. They all love it, and Nelson is living better too. But then the worst thinkable thing happens to the Gregory family. He loses his son in a car crash. Well, no one knows if it was planned or not. But the Gregory family keeps living there.
