The movie is about a man named James, who is a prison guard. He’s moving to Robben Island, to check mail, because he speak their language, Xhosa. Later he gets a promotion, now he’s going to guard Mandela. The movie take place in South Africa, Robben Island. Apartheid started in South Africa, put in law 1938. 1964 Mandela, was put into prison in Robben Island, 1991 he got released. I think it is about the 70’.
The main character is James and Mandela.
What is a “kaffer”?
A Kaffer is a black one. They are called a kaffer, caused by their colour and they make kaffe. Another word for a negro. You can say a nigger, it is a illegal word.
What do you think of the things the parents tell their children about the black people?
I think it is disrespectful! They tell very bad things, like they weren’t humans. Natasja sees an episode when she was a little girl, she see some polices who hit a woman, and she drops the baby on the floor. They hit her because she haven’t a passport. She gets very sad, and don’t want to eat. They tells her that it should be that way, the blacks are terrorist. The mom compares the blacks to too different kinds of animals, you can’t live in a goosefarm then you are a duck.
