South African was an apartheid country. Nelson Mandela and other black politician were in jail.

James was a write prison guard and thought the black were the source to all evil in South Africa. James Gregory grew up in Trankeis and learnt to talk Xhosa. He was transferred to Robbern Island at the same time Nelson Mandela was put in this prison. James had a wife and two kids which also moved to the Island. Shortly after his arrival, he became responsible of censure of the in and out going letters and conversation between Mandela and his visitors.

James Gregory was trying to make Mandela’s life hard. He overheard a conversation between Nelson and his visitors. Mandela’s wife was arrested after visit.

So when James gave information about Mandela, based on the conversations, wider to his boss, it had been used to example kill Nelson’s son.

He talks to Nelson Mandela about the Freedom Charter. James thought that it was about how the black want to take over South Africa. Following James had going to the library and read the Freedom Charter. He realized that it was about all human should not be different and all people must be free.
