First Mr. Willison seems to be a man who really wanted to be a god father to Rob. He wanted all the best for Rob, but unfortunately he failed.
Mr. Willison had a hard childhood. He always needed to study so he could finish school with good grades. He never had the chance to do something to develop his physique. He never rowed, he never boxed – he never became one of the tough sport guys in school. It seems to me as if all and everything that Mr. Wilson owned was his books, because he never did anything than just studying. He did all that, just to secure himself a job, and a nice future as well.
It was obvious that all this, a scratch from his past and the lack of a nice childhood, really was something unforgettable for Mr. Willison. He was sad about that no one had ever been encouraging him to build himself up as a usual boy regularly needs to. He is unsatisfied with his body and therefore a man without any selfesteem and selfconfidence at all. The story told the readers how passionately Mr. Wilson wanted Rob´s life to become easier than his own. He absolutely doesn’t want his son to have the same childhood as his own. He just doesn’t want Rob to make the same mistakes as himself. Therefore Mr. Willison tried very hard to persuade Rob to do sports, so that he can be a real tough sportsman (p.14, l.20).
