Twelve million Africans were shipped to the Americans from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The Americans had their colonies in Africa, and they thought it would be smart to get the resources, and later the people too. They transported more people than they could have one a ship, a lot of the African people didn’t manage to get to America before they were dead by the trip. The Americans broke into the African families and took the youngest and strongest members of the family. Of these, an estimated 645,000 were brought to the United States. The largest number s was shipped to Brazil. The slave population in the United States had grown to four million by the 1860 Census. Slavery was the principal issue leading to the American Civil War, which lasted for four years.
Treatment of slaves
The treatment of the slaves was one of the worst things about the whole thing. By law, the slave owners could be fined for not punishing recaptured runaway slaves. There was a really lot of cases where they even got killed.
Eugene Dominic Genovese, an American historian of the American South and American Slavery, he was noted for bringing relations between the slaves, and the slave owners in the south. Genovese claims that because the slaves were the legal property of their owners, it was not unusual for enslaved black women to be raped by their owners, members of their owner's families, or their owner's friends. According to Genovese, the slaves were fed, clothed, housed and provided medical care in the most minimal manner.
