This novel extract is about Eilean. Eilean lives with her parents and her two sisters Mary and Fiona in a small town in Scotland. We think Eilean is the middle-child and Fiona the oldest, because we think she is a little bit more commanding of the three sisters. Eilean is about 12-15 years old because she still going to school , and she is trying to be independent, but it is very hard, because she is living in a traditional family with a father who is a priest. She want to live a different life than her parents want. Eilean dreams of the big cities with shops and cafés and stuff, but she live in a very “old” city. She has a very bad relationship to her father because he is very decisive, and sometimes she cannot play with her two friends, Angus and Lewes because of him. Elieans relationship to her mother is much better, which you also can see in the text: “Eilean, will you take this spool of thread to Mrs. MacIver after? She’s a nice old soul, she’ll probably be glad of the company. I know it’s Sunday, but I’m sure your father wouldn’t mind if you were a wee bit later back”. It shows that her mother is against her dad, and the mother helps Eilean to get some sparetime with her friends, as she could not do if she answered her dad.
