The novel is about the girl Eilean, who lives in a small town in Scotland. Eilean lives with her

parents and her two sisters, Fiona and Mary. It’s not known whether her grandfather still lives there, or they just keep his old chair. Nonetheless, they all live on a small farm, they only have

a few chickens and a cow.

I think Fiona is the oldest, Eilean the middle child and Mary the youngest.

Eilean is about 14-15 years old, and she’s trying to be independent, but it’s hard in an old traditional family with a father who’s a priest. She wants to live in a different way than her old-fashion minded parents want her to live. Eilean dreams of big cities with shops, cafés and stuff, but she is stuck in a small almost medieval town.

She has two friends, Angus and Lewis, whom her parents, or at least her dad, don’t like. Because it’s not normal for a girl only to have boys as friends, and especially not those two louts. It doesn’t seem like the mother has too much to say, which again underlines, that this is a very traditional family where the father is the head.
