Analyse af 'We are Bound for the Promised Land'

We are Bound for the Promised Land is an extract from a novel written by A.E. Watterson. The extract is about a girl named Eilean Macleod who is with some animals when we meet her for the first time. The story is about Eilean and her family and their daily life. The family is a very religious family with the father being the priest of the village, and the mother is a housewife. Eilean’s parents together have three daughters; Fiona who is the oldest of the three, Mary and Eilean who is the youngest and the main character in the story. Eilean is a little girl who seems to like her animals, because she is talking to the cow and the chickens while she is spending time with them and she lets the animals eat from her hands. However, she twirls a plait in one of the cow’s ears, because the cow is ignoring her, and she is also speaking to the cow as if she was speaking with a human being and this is seen when she says; “I’ll leave you to your dinner, then”, and this also shows that she is a little girl who haven’t yet learnt that animals do not understand her like other people do when she speaks with them. Eilean is also characterized as being a bit boyish, because she spends time with her two boy-friends even though the parents are against it. Yet she seems to be a strong person though she is a little girl and this is seen when she says; “But Father, they’re my friends. I don’t want any other friends. I picked them, and, and they picked me!”, and she says this although she was told to have friends who are girls by her father who seems to be a strict person, who one should do as he says. Later Eilean isn’t afraid of telling her two friends Angus and Lewis that she is bored playing at the beach, which also shows that she is a strong person, and that she dares to say her opinion.
