The poem is about the writer driving in America with only him, the radio and his money. He is expressing having worked hard to obtain something that doesn’t exist, but he wants to change his life. He's not a boy anymore he is a man, and he wants to do what he wants, instead of what everyone else expects him to. He is willing to leave his town because his life there doesn't make him happy, he feels weak and it is painful for him to live the life he is living now. He believes that there is more out there for him, and he has faith in the American dream.
The poem I built up of 6 stanzas where every other is the same, so there are only four different stanzas. The tone of the poem is very serious and is very much American when reading the poem, you can almost imagine the thick country/southern accent associated with Texas and Utah. But even though the poem is very serious it is also very hopeful, and the atmosphere is also very American, when reading the poem, we almost feel the heat of the American highway and route 50.
The poem has a lot of symbols. In the text, the promised land, which we can compare with the religious “promised land”, tells us is that he views America as a god-given gift to man. And the twister that destroys everything faithless can be seen as him cutting everything hopeless out of his life.
