Late in the fifties the expression “vicarious living” came into the Danish language. The expression and the meaning had been known in the debate in England and the USA for couple of years, especially after the introduction of the year-long radio and TV series, which dealt with everyday life in a family or limited groups of person’s right down to the smallest details.
In the USA, these TV-series were called “soap operas” even if they did not have anything in common with operas than a very simple action; they were normally sponsored by the large soap companies who through here secured a maximal number of potential buyers that is the full-time housewives. It was characteristic in the USA that the series broadcasted at times when housewives had to have time to relax after the housework efforts. The successes of the series, both in the USA as in England, were obvious.
The English who have an eye for the things of practical exploitation saw in this success an instrument to help the English agriculture, which is threatened by competition from Dominions and from for ensample Denmark, to recapture its part of the market. Therefore, the BBC created a fictitious series, which was about life on an English farm. The farm existed only on index cards at BBC and they led a careful check with every single detail in the broadcasts.
