'The Commitments' filmanalyse

The film takes place in a working class community in Dublin.

Jimmy is a would-be music business wheeler and dealer, and he has decided that what Dublin needs is a top-shelf soul band. At a wedding Jimmy talks to two of his friends, who is playing in a band and there he gets the idea of making a band. It’s not as easy as he thought. After a long round of auditions he finally finds people who is good enough to be in the band. To be a member of the band, they have to answer two questions: Who is their role model and which instrument they play.

Jimmy makes two inspired discoveries: Deco, an abrasive and alcoholic streetcar conductor who nevertheless has a voice that everybody would starve for, and Joey "The Lips" Fagan, a horn player who knows soul music backwards and forwards and claims to have played with everyone from Wilson Pickett to Elvis Presley.

Jimmy needs three backup singer, and he know who to ask. The girls who are chosen are Imelda, Bernie and Natalie.

In the train Jimmy give the band a lecture: They must listen to soul music. Like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, James Brown an Wilson Pickett, who were greats.
