Since Britain separated from the EU, there have been a huge debate about whether or not it was the right decision. In this assignment I will be going over some of the pros and cons to give a clear overview of the situation. June 23th was the day where Britain held a Referendum concerning if Britain should leave the EU or not. The opinion polls ended 51% to 49% in favor of Britain leaving the EU.
For the people saying yes to Brexit, Sovereignty was seen as nothing but a benefit, because few disagree that EU membership involves giving up control over their own affairs. The former prime minister of England David Cameron stated in an interview that he doesn’t love the EU but he still votes that Britain should remain in the EU. The reason for that is – as he also states, is that Britain for a lot of the advantages of EU, without having many of the disadvantages such as keeping their own currency etc. One of the reasons why David Cameron doesn’t like or want to be part of the EU is the immigration laws. David Cameron states that “Well, put simply, yes, we need immigration, but it needs to be controlled. We need to have control over how many people come here and who, but the reality is we’ve inherited a system where we don’t really have control over either. David Cameron thinks that Under EU law, Britain cannot prevent anyone from another member state coming to live in the country – while Britons benefit from an equivalent right to live and work anywhere else in the EU. The result has been a huge increase in immigration into Britain, particularly from eastern and southern Europe.
