In 1948 the national party won the election and introduced the contry to apartheid. Apartheid means "being apart" and the idea was that every race has its own identity. The black was divided into ten tribal groups because the goverment wanted to make South Africa a "white" country. The white goverment had decided that the blacks (70% of the population) could only have 7.5% of the country's land to live on. These areas were to be the new "homes" for the blacks and they were wherefore called "homeland".

The goverment made some rules to divid the White from the Blacks.
1. Bantustan laws
2. Trade unions deprived of normal rights
3. Unwanted organisations and meetings banned

4. Poor education standards for the coloured and good standards for the whites. Education in the bantustans is regarded as an effective way to teach the africans to accept their inferior positions in south Africa.
5. Censorship. It is forbidden to publish, import or distribute publications, films etc., that the goverment does not approve.
6. The whites earn 15-20 times as much as the Blacks, desppite the fact that the Blacks are taxed more heavily than the white people.
