Football hooligans are people who cause trouble before, during or after football matches. Most of the trouble at football matches occurs spontaneously, perhaps because of something that happens during the match.

However, a lot of football violence is organised. Criminal gangs attach themselves to a football club and attack the fans of opposing teams. Sometimes gangs from different football clubs arrange to meet at a match and start a fight.

History

Football hooliganism was first recognised as a serious problem in England in the 1960s, but it actually has a long history. Even in the 13th century, football was associated with violence. At this time, football matches could involve hundred of players and often ended as battles between rival villages and towns. Modern football originates from these violent confrontations.

Although there are football hooligans in many countries, England is often seen as having a particular problem. There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, England has a much longer history of football violence than other countries.

Secondly, English hooligans have not only caused problems in England. Unlike hooligans of other nationalities, they have also been active abroad when their teams play in foreign countries.
