The guard James Gregory, a very normal Afrikaner, regards blacks as sub-human. He grew up in the Transkei, where he learned to speak Xhosa at an early age. It made him the perfect jailer because Mandela and his party members also talked Xhosa. Gregory speaks their language and can therefore listen to them when they spoke, without they showed it. The plan backfired after that Gregory spent much time with Mandela, changed Gregory's attitude to the black slowly from racism, direct support for Mandela's struggle for a free South Africa. he talked more and more with Mandela, and when Mandela was to be released, Gregory gave Mandela a thing that had brought him happiness. when he came out, there was a large herd of black African who cheered and was excited for Mandela's efforts.
