During history many reasons have been given for starting a war. Conflicts among human beings are just as old as the human being itself. It is said that prostitution is the oldest job in the world, but it could just as well be the soldier’s. Maybe fighting is a part of our personality. And if we had not had that protecting and aggressive gene we might not have survived at all.
Many wars have been started because of territorial disagreements. for instance if the population in a country has grown very large they might need more space – Lebensraum -. Wars have been started if the inhabitants in a country feel they have been humiliated. An example is Germany were they felt deeply humiliated after The Great War and the so called Versailles peace treaty, and that was one of the reasons for beginning Second World War.
Nowadays many wars are started because of different ideas of for example religion, political systems and democracy. You can call them ideological conflicts. It is said about Second World War that it had to be fought. We had to fight against fascism when it became a threat to most of Europe. Hitler’s Nazism in Germany and Mussolini’s fascism in Italy. In this case we might talk about a necessary war or a just war. Some people have called it a blessed war. For all those who lost their dear ones I think it must be difficult to use the word “blessed”. One hundred million lost their lives.
