Zulu people calle themselves 'the people of the heavens' and they are the largest ethnic group of South Africa, with an estimated 10 million Zulu residents in KwaZulu-Natal.

isiZulu is the language of the Zulu people and about 10 million residents are fluent in the language. In the 19th century they merged into a great kingdom under the leadership of Shaka.

Location of the Zulus

They originated from Nguni communities who took part in the Bantu migrations over millennia.

The Zulu kingdom is centered on the southeast coast of southern Africa between the Drakensburg mountains and the Indian ocean, emerged in the early 19th century under the command of the great Zulu warrior-king Shaka.

History

the Zulu were originally a minor clan in what is today Northern KwaZulu-Natal, founded ca. 1574 by Zulu kaMalandela.

In the Nguni languages, iZulu means heaven or weather. At that time, the area was occupied by many large Nguni communities and clans. Nguni communities had migrated down Africa's east coast over millennia, as part of the Bantu migrations.

Clothing

Zulus wear a variety of attire, both traditional for ceremonial or culturally celebratory occasions, and modern Westernised clothing for everyday use. The women dress differently depending on whether they are single, engaged, or married.
