A boarding school is a school where pupils not only study, but also live there. The name “boarding” is a mix of “bed and board” which is the same as “food and lodging”. Most of the boarding schools are private independent schools, which mean that they don’t have to follow the normal “school rules”. In England there are around 700 boarding schools, where you already can start from the age of eight.

Boarding school pupils normally return home during the school holidays and weekends, so the boarders spend most of their childhood away from their families. That can have some serious consequences for the child, because the child won’t have his parents around, and that can make him fell abandon. The child will maybe ask him self, why his parents left him alone. Did he perhaps do something wrong. Or is there something wrong with him - And that will of course hurt the child’s feelings. A child in such a young age as eight needs his mom and dad to be around when he needs them. He needs to know that his parents love him, and always will be there for him. Or else the child wont be able to develop him self properly, in the future. But on the other side, the parents will ensure their children a good education, by sending them away. The children will learn good behavior and how to be more independent and managing themselves. They will get more ambitious and confident. Besides that, the children will be among friends and good, responsible teachers. They will have the opportunity to join sports and other spare time activities. Of course there is nothing that can fill the empty hole, which only can be filled by the parents love, but that is a part of the development you get by living in a boarding school. And it’s not because you won’t be able to see your family again. It’s just a part of the independent development. But again, a child in the age of eight doesn’t belong in a boarding school, but home with his loving family. He should sit down with his parents and talk about his day at school, while eating a meal together. He should know that his parents love him, and always will be there for him.
