School: Schools segregated in black and white. 20 x more money spent on white.
Less books, teachers, classrooms for the black. Because of that about a quarter of the black was illiterate (not able to read or write).
(Today (still school)): the new democratic government is trying to make education fairer. (they want everyone to go to school for at least 10 years).
(example): The Elda Mahlentle School: Raised by Ms. Elda Mahlentle. Ms. Elda saw that many families were too poor to afford travelling costs to other parts of Cape Town. It took 2 years to collect money, books and equipment. Today there are 400 pupils and 12 teachers. Most people walk to school.
Pupils in SA learn to read and write Xhosa and English in their first two school years. Then after that every new school year is called a standard.
Most pupils wear a uniform, but some can’t afford it.
Spare time:
Sport was/is taken very seriously in SA, but during the apartheid, their teams was not allowed to compete with other countries. Today they are taking part in competitions around the world.
Church is also a very important thing in SA. Here they chat, worship and meet each other.
