South Africa is a very poor country. In many years it has been like this, but unfortunately is only the black population, who is very poor. Of course there are some black people, who are like the white people. It is because the black people are oppressed. Because many black people are oppressed goes many years back. One of the reasons is Apartheid, which the government started. Apartheid is a system, which would keep all the power in South Africa.
You see, for many years ago, English and Boers came to the country, and they both wanted the power, so they began to fight against each other. But when they saw it didn’t lead anywhere, they decided to rule the country together- because together they were strong!
And in 1948 the Apartheid life really began for all South African people. Everything was split into two- cinemas, restaurants, benches, parks, etc. The white people got 87% of the country, when the black people only got 13%. Some black people, wanted to fight against the government and Apartheid. One of them was Nelson Mandela. From a very young age, he knew that he wanted to be a lawyer and fight against Apartheid. For many years he experienced resistance, but in 1999 he became South Africa's first black president.
