“The Problem We All Live With” was painted by the famous artist Normann Rockwell in 1964.In the 60s there WAS a lot of racial trouble in America, and one of the problems was the schools, which were separated into schools for black people and schools for white people. After many years of protests, the black people were allowed in white schools. But many white people were unhappy with this, so the US government often had to send marshals to escort the blacks. That’s what we see in this picture.

The picture shows three white men and a little black girl walking on a pavement. They all walk the same direction, with left hand straight down and right arm bent, like they were marching. The setting is outside, in the street. You can’t see the heads of the men, this would seem weird if you ask critics who know Rockwell, because he usually would paint faces in great detail. But if we think carefully, we might find out why he did this. He probably wants us to reflect on, what they are feeling. Or does he want to show us, that they don’t feel anything? It’s worth thinking about. The little girl is wearing a white dress and white shoes. The men are wearing suits and a yellow band, which says: “US marshal”, they are wearing black shoes and wedding rings. She is also carrying a book, a pencil and a ruler. In the background there’s a dirty wall with a crack, and someone made some graffiti on it which says “NIGGER” and “KKK”. There’s also a tomato splashed on the wall, so it looks like blood, maybe someone on the other side of the street just threw it at them?
