The short story Live Like a Dog, Alone beginns in media res. The story takes place in a cab, and the cabdriver, a man from Kosovo has an absurd conversation with the maincharacter Miriam througout the entire story, mainly about what animal he sees himself as, because he is lonely. Miriam, who is on her way home from a night, spend at the hospital, feels duty-bound to cheer him up. She gets a bit irritated, because he reminds her of her self-pityfied ex husband, who had ran of with an alcoholic actress and left Miriam penniless. After Miriams divorce she has become a succesful woman with money.
At first she finds the cabdriver dirty, perhaps to protect herself from falling for him, but after a while she finds him attractive. Close to Miriams home the driver invites himself to a cup of coffee, which she allows him…
