Feeling lonely at times is very human. There are different kinds of loneliness: Feeling as though you don’t have enough or any friends at all. Sometimes we suffer because of a false belief about ourselves: “If I am alone, then something must be wrong with me or perhaps I am unlovable”. No one likes to be alone in this world we live in, because everyone wants to have friends and family around themselves, but at the end of the day, we are all alone. So what is the word loneliness? Is it a feeling? A condition? or is it something else. For different people, its means different things. This is also the case in “Live Like a Dog, Alone”, where the author writes about a woman and a man, who both are very lonely, and they tell each other about how it is to be lonely. Miriam is “fifty-five but most people assumed she was in her forties”. Her husband or ex-husband left her for an English actress and left Miriam penniless. She had made it in life and “now she ran a successful nursing agency, and had been voted Businesswoman of the Year”, so we can here that she has a great career but she has no children, but her heart is dysfunctional, therefore she sometimes has to go to the hospital, but it is also because she got a lot of stress. Miriam is a shallow person, because she judges people on their look (at first she thought that the driver is disgusting, but when she saw his face, she actually found him okay for a cabdriver to be). It seems to be, that she has a lot of prejudices against immigrants. She’s actually also a kind of a snob, because she doesn’t like the idea of the cabdriver calling her by first name. When reading the story you observe that Miriam is an extremely caring person who needs to make sure that everybody is happy and satisfied. “She felt duty-bound to cheer him up”.
