“A window explodes behind her, sending cascades of glass, musical, deadly, to the pavement. Laura is unharmed”

That is how the short story ‘Low Visibility’ ends. An ending that outwardly is described as deadly. Pieces of glass are airborne by an explosion, cascades of glass are spreading over the pavement, and in the middle of this shower of fatal glass a young woman walks with a retrieved confidence. Laura is once again what she used to be; independent. But who is Laura? And more important, what happened to her? How did she come to the point where she is compelled to find solace in small things. For example whether her husband is going abuse her by “simply” bruising her flesh, or by hurting her absent-mindedly.

Laura used to be a girl filled with spirit and energy. Her character showed fortitude, and her humour could set a room to laughter. But then she met John. John had moulded a shield around him. He protected himself the outher world, from love and tender, by terrorizing and petrifying anyone who came too near. But John thought that the humour and spirit of Laura would break his barrier. Unfortunately the future did not turned out like that and John blamed Laura for his unhappiness and his dissatisfaction. Laura became his hostage, and had to adapt to a future as John’s obedient wife. Their marriage is a cynical and contemptible version of what should have been a joyful voyage for both of them. John terrorizes Laura by every possible method. His manner is violent, he slaps and shoves her whenever he gets a chance to. He behaves cynically towards everything and everyone.
