Margaret Murphy wrote the short story Low Visibility in 2008. Laura is the protagonist of the novel, and she is married to John. She is dissatisfied with her marriage since John is an abusive partner.
Laura used to be a happy woman, but as her marriage progressed, she began to feel increasingly invisible and useless. She's become accustomed to prioritizing John's wants over her own.
She lacks the strength to stand up for herself and walk away from him. But one day, John gets into a fight and injures himself severely. Laura ultimately leaves him while he is down on the ground surrounded by bricks, crying for assistance, and she feels some form of independence again.
The story is told by a third-person narrator. We are told that Laura wasn't always like this. Once she had a cheerful personality and was able to light up any room with her laughter, but that quality is now gone because of John. In truth, John only wanted Laura because of the exuberance she possessed and because he believed that she would tear down his walls of defence, but instead he managed to ruin her. “... he held her so tight, his hostage and his shields, squeezing the joy out of her until there was none left” pp. 8 line 23-24.
