The violent and agitated relationship between Laura and John, is displayed with a very authentic and realistic approach. Showing the extreme disadvantages, and hostile actions taking place in a brutal household. Forcing women like Laura, to be the face and voice of the shallow souls, that are constantly being captured by the abusive negativity of their partners. This melancholy reality is portrayed through our main characters Laura and John, in the short story “Los Visibility” by Margaret Murphy (2008). The story is told through a third-person omniscient narrator, which gives the readers the effect of compassion and understanding towards our characters. This is viewed on page 8 line 20: “He thought that her good humour would seep into him, breaching the walls of his defences”. This quote is also a perfect representation of their marriage, and the undertone that lies beneath it. Although John is superior to Laura, this anger and annoyance towards her - comes from a place of jealousy. Jealousy of her former behavior, and likeable personality, that he can’t uptain.
Laura has become a shadow of what she once were. She is interpreted as a puppet in his game, where he can, and does, change the rules whenever he pleases to. Page 9 line 42: "She doesn't know the right thing to say, because he changes the rules each time” - she is in constant concern and despair as a result of her fear of John. She has lost herself in the midst of his jealousy and hatred. Although she is characterized in the text, as a former popular and respected girl, full of energy - page 8 line 19: "She was a girl who could set a whole room to laughter".
