’Low Visibility’ is a short story by Margaret Murphy. In my essay I will analyze and interpret the story. I will especially focus on a characterization of the main character Laura and her marriage with her Husband John, the riots of the street, the way the story is structured, the ending of the story, and the title – ‘Low Visibility’

The story is about a girl named Laura and her relationship to her husband. At the same time we hear about their marriage from Laura’s point of view, there are riots in the street where they live. But we don’t know that the riots are in the same city as Laura and John. But the story takes an unexpected twist, when we find out, that Laura and John are in the middle of them.

Laura is a woman, who in the past was “a girl who could set a room to laughter” she was a girl with energy, and her “exuberance” was what her husband loved about her. But the Laura we meet in the story is not like that. She is weak, and scared of her husband John. John is abusing her and treating her like she is a slave or something. John has made her into something she isn’t “ the slaps and shoves that at first shocked her, became something to be expected they reshaped her, moulding her into something less distinct, more insubstantial” Laura is a woman who gets beaten by her husband, and do nothing about it. Their relationship is not love, its exploitation.
