Text 1 and 2 are both letters written by American soldiers, who both died in a young age during the Vietnam War. Both are writing their parents, assuring them that everything is all right.In the first letter Rod writes to his mother, telling her about his extension in Vietnam. Though being well aware of her concern, he believes that Vietnam is the place he is being needed. And he also explains how he likes the challenge and excitement the war gives him, despite the pain of the loss of his dead comrades. But as he says, that is the challenge he must face. The Vietnam War is a job that needs to be done.
Things are going well back home he says. But in Vietnam there are young men in need of an elder and more experienced hand, which he is willing to give. They need a leader, they need him. He will not be content with fighting on the streets or at the university. To him there are only two options: To fight in Vietnam or to shut up. And he stays where thinks he is being needed – In Vietnam.
In the second letter mike writes to his parents, telling them about his experiences. Though being hurt from a landmine, he assures them that he is all right, and that there is no reason to be concerned. But after being hurt from a landmine with his team, he feels better as a leader. Before he was “an outsider”, but now he is a part of the team – he has achieved their respect. As a bonus for he will also receive a purple heart. And he could be evacuated back to the states as another soldier, who had, as he says it “wounds about as serious as a couple of mosquito bites”.
