The short story is not chronological, as it is based on a flashback, i.e., something that has happened before.

The story is written by a third person narrator. The narrator presents the narrative from Carlyle's point of view, i.e., the narrator is not part of the story, but outside. As a reader, you get very close to Carlyle's thoughts and opinions, this makes it easier to relate and put yourself in his point of view and way of being towards the woman.

The narrator has a lot of focus on Carlyle's perspective, so the reader finds it easier to relate to him and it builds a tension and interest in Carlyle.

The language of the text contains metaphors that build up the mood and describe the caretakers' not so good perspective and approach to life.

The short story builds media res, an example of this is when the woman knocks on the door of the gas station "When the woman knocked on the locked glass door a few minutes after midnight, Carlyle was stretched…" (Page 1 line 1-2) here you become a reader curious and would like to find out who the stranger woman is

The story takes place one night in the state of North Carolina. The story is told in three different places, at the gas station where Carlyle works, in Carlyle's home and ten, at the end of the story at the bus station. The gas station is a bit outside the city, so it's a bit isolated and you can collect it.
