Analyse af 'The woman of letters'

“I don’t consider it a lie. Love needs a loose interpretation sometimes”. Can humans be born greedy or do we just want to find our happiness so bad that we become greedy persons. Happiness is different from person to person, which we see between all the different characters in the short story “the woman of letters” by Angels Readman 2015.

The narrator in the short story can be seen in an outer characterization and an Inner characterization. The narrator’s characterization is conveyed directly through self-characterization, and indirectly through her actions and attitude.

The narrator’s outer characterization tells us that she lives in foreign countries, potentially in a have-not nation. The narrator is also the only one who can read and write in the nearby region. - “I am a woman of letters – the only woman for kilometres who reads and writes English.” (p. 1, ll. 8-9).

The reason why she speaks English is because the narrator used to be married to an English man, and in that way, she learned to speak English. - “my husband left me, along with

the English language, a son, and this house” (p. 3, ll. 99-100).

The narrator makes use of her linguistic proficiency which, she uses to find local girls that can’t read or write English a husband. - “It’s my job to make her, all of them, sound ripe for picking by a man overseas.” (p. 1, l. 8).
