Employers all around the world are scratching their heads in frustration with the Generation Y and their shy attitude towards hard labour. What is an employer to do?
The future of the labour market is in the hands of the, yet to be seen, most optimistic generation. They feel empowered and are in the belief that the whole world lies before their feet just waiting to be conquered! Even though they are raised of this conviction the world does not quite agree.
They find it hard to be considered an underling to their boss
They are looked upon as workshy and disloyal to their employers, which is serious accuses, yet they might carry some truth to them. The Generation Y, also referred to as Echo Boomers, are characterised by being racially and ethnically diverse, extremely independent as a reflection of a time with a trend of divorce, day care and single parenting. Even though their parents might not have believed in eternal love for each other; they have not failed in making the Echo Boomers feel like the centre of the world. This might be the reason why Generation Y finds it hard to be considered an
underling to their boss at their workplace. Echo Boomers are well aware that the demand, and therefore competition, for their labour force is rather high, which is why they, unlike their parents’ parents, are able to make a demand of working conditions, which would make the conditions of earlier generations’ workplace seem like poor slavery or that is what they are told.
