He mentioned it in the first page “It’s a Mexican word because that’s what I’m. A Mexican and I’m not ashamed of it”.
Chato Is a young boy, but he don’t mention his age. “Today I quit school”, it describes that he is teenage boy. He comes from the Eastside in old L.A. He is a member of a gang, which calls De shamrock, and it’s also the street where he lives.
Chato is the only person, who is back in his gang, but still he fells something for his gang. His relationship with the family is bad, he just live with them without influence. “I want no part of him”, he has a bad affair with his father, he don’t fell that his father concern about him. “How will you support me, when I retire?” The father show that he cares about him, he had some expectations of him.
The mom doesn’t show him any attention, “I kept waiting for her to bawl me out about school, but I guess she forgot”. She is too busy on the babies, she don’t show any interest on him.
