The tree texts are all about smoking ban and the different positions. The tree texts come up with some issues, which make us think about the positive and negative outcome.

Text one ‘Benefits of smoke ban will be felt at once’ is an article written by Robin McKie in 2007. Robin McKie has a positive attitude, he argues that the smoking ban will improve people’s health and help the non-smokers who breathe in second-hand smoke to avoid the smoke. He describes how the smoking ban has been met by the countries where it came into effect and what different it has led to in people’s health. In Helena, Montana, the number of heart attacks fell by 40 percent compared with other years. Text two ‘Is this the end of English literature?’ is written by A. N. Wilson in 2007. A. N. Wilson criticizes the smoking ban because he thinks it will damage the English literature. All the greatest authors from the 17th, 18th, 19th and the 20th has smoked and many of them gets much of their inspiration and ideas on a café while they enjoy a smoke, if they cannot do that anymore it will be a problem. But it is not just a problem for authors, other people will stay at home instead of enjoy one other’s company and it will harm and change the atmosphere on the cafés and pubs. He thinks the smoking ban is an attack on basic liberty, and he tells how him and his wife have found much-loved cafés and pubs empty, or filled with middleclass eight-year-old drinking soft drinks. The last text ‘Another victory for Britain’s insufferable paternalists’ is written by Simon Jenkins in 2006. Simon Jenkins is against the smoking ban. He thinks the government interferes too much with the population’s life. He says that smoking is unpleasant but we cannot ban all unpleasant things. Fuming traffic and noisy neighbours are unpleasant too. Simon Jenkins himself does not smoke and he could be indifferent but he is not. We cannot ban all these things just because some people do not like it. He thinks it is an excusing for inhibiting freedom.
