1. The article is about the death of two New York City police officers. The 53rd Governor of New York George E. Pataki has made a law proposal, which says that anyone convicted of a first degree murder of a police officer should be punished with the death penalty. The leading director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty David Kaczynski says that new statistics show that violent crime and murder are down statewide, even after a year and a half without the death penalty. He thinks that capital punishment is plagued with problems and injustice, and he think the right way to solve it is to use a sentence of life imprisonment instead without parole instead, because it protects the society while it is justice. Kathy Dillon, daughter of a murdered State Trooper means that if the death penalty couldn’t save/ protect her father that day, neither will it protect other police officers, who risk their lives. She also believes that humans should not have the right to decide who dies with no exceptions. Ozzie Thompson a former police officer says that he knows how bad the death penalty is to prevent crime, he thinks that it’s biased an unfair, wasteful and ineffective. Some law enforcements are also opposing the reinstatement of the death penalty.Current and former police officers say, that Pataki’s new death penalty bill takes the attention from the real problems such as the need of more police and better protection. His bill doesn’t even help the grieving families. They mean that New York is better without the death penalty.
