1. Give an outline of the different positions on the smoking ban which are presented in the texts.
The article, “Benefits of smoke ban will be felt at once” (text 1) from The Observer website, gives a general view on how the smoke ban has effected the public. The article accentuates the different studies based on research from an international journal of science, Nature. The article gives examples on how some part of the world already have seen advantages by introducing the smoking ban. “It was found that hospital admissions for heart attacks fell by 11 per cent after bans were imposed in Piedmont in Italy”, here can wee see that the bans works, and really helps getting the health level up. Professor Colin Blakemore says: “More than 70 per cent of smokers say they want to stop.” The most of the smokers do not want to smoke, but they cannot stop because of their dependence, therefore are the bans a great tool to help the smokers to be tobacco free, and at the same time help them become healthier.
“Non-smokers who breathe in second-hand smoke currently face increased risks about 25 per cent of getting lung cancer or heart disease.” The smoking ban is not just for the smokers own good, but also to save the non-smokers from the dangerous smoke. The non-smokers might not smoke, but they get affected from the smoke. Scientists have confirmed that the non-smokers that associate with smokers or just go to places where there are smoke get a bigger risk of getting cancer.
