1. Give an outline of the different positions on the smoking ban which are presented in the texts.
In text 1 you hear Robin McKie’s opinion on the new smoking ban in England. He is definitely in favor of the smoking ban. He has loads of information about how many “to young dead’s” we could avoid and lots of other information which came from studies from around the world where there already is a smoking ban.
In text 2 you hear A. N. Wilson start with saying something about all the greatest writers in the uk. He tells us that there is a direct link between the greatest writers and smoking because they were all smokers. The text is called “is it the end of English literature” and with that he tries to make a connection between English culture and the greatest English writers. In the text he also complains about how the government makes this ban and how they try to make you do something you may actually don’t want by making laws.
In text 3 Simon Jenkins come’s up with a new point of view. He don’t really care to much of the specific “smoking ban” he thinks that the ban is a violation of liberty. He basically says that since Britain is a liberal county with a liberal population that they should be able to smoke everywhere they want. But he can still understand why they did the ban in many public areas because it could cause harm to others but he disagrees with in ban in private owed bars and clubs. He thinks that’s its up to the owner to decide that and the government shouldn’t have anything to do with it.
