Plot summary of 'In the Name of the Father'

Gerry Conlon lives in Northern Ireland with his family. He was troublemaker and the troubles were hitting Northern Ireland. His family was agreed that they would send Gerry to London in England. When Gerry was on the ship he meets his childhood friend Paul Hill. Paul Hill was also on his way to London. Gerry had an aunt In London, so his family thought that Gerry was going to sleep with his aunt, but he wasn’t. Because Paul Hill acquainted some hippies. Paul Hill makes an agreement with the hippies so he could stay and sleep with them. But they didn’t know that Paul had a freind with him. Because of conflict between IRA and the englich goverment, sometimes IRA had some terroist activity in london. So because of all this english people belived the conflict was supported by most irish people. And they hated the Irish people and called them terrorist. The man who lives together with the hippie’s don´t like Gerry and Paul and he decided to get them out of their house. The only place they could live now was at Gerry´s aunt.

Gerry and Paul were very happy to be reunited and they decided to take a walk. They went to a park and sat on a bench. Suddenly came a man out of a bush, it turned out that he also was an Irish man. They gave him some amount of money because he don´t have enough money to take care of himself. A woman lost her keys and accidentaly Gerry found the keys and moved in to the woman´s house. But it was the wrong place to be, because at the same time Gerry started to steal. A bombe sprang in Guildford and some people died. When Gerry and Paul had stolen 700 pund, they began to buy the same clothes and shoes. They went to Belfast with a lot of money, but suddenly they came under police custody, because of they thought that it was Gerard "Gerry" Conlon, Paul Michael Hill, Patrick "Paddy" Armstrong and Carole Richardson were guilty. When they were under interrogation the police was antagonistic towards them. In a sense, the police tortured the Guildford-four. In the court room, they were convicted for the bomb in Guildford, and they were trying to tell the judge that it wasn´t them. But they couldn´t prove it because none of them had evidence. The judge find them guilty. He sentenced the Guildford-four. When Gerry went to jail, he saw his dad in jail too. Gerry and his dad Patrick "Giuseppe" Conlon slept together in a prison cell. At a time the man from IRA who has bombed Guildford came and confessed. He was guilty and deserves to be sentenced lifetime. He meets Gerry and was saying that they have to communicate with each other. They make decision so Gerry and Giuseppe could get out of prison, because the Guildford-four were innocents and the police knew it well because when the IRA man was in the interrogation room he pleaded guilty and claimed that he was the man who bombed Guildford. He was trying to help the Guildford-four and declare that they were innocent and he says that the police must release the four innocent people. The police were not listening, so now it was a time to get their own liberation from the prison. It was not only in jail there was a fight, but also around the country. People were beginning to make riots and demonstrations. Gerry´s lawyer Gareth Peirce was the person whom started the revolution against the Guildford-four proceedings. Some days before the new trail Gareth Peirce has found some very interesting documents. It was confidential information, but that information could prove that the Guildford-four were innocent. In the court room she was fragile and she showed the documents to the judge. Actualy it was forbidden to take the official documents, but she did it because the whole evidence was there. He read it and said that it was not tolerable to take documents like that, but on second thoughts the judge was disappointed with Inspector Robert Dixon because of his behavior and his way to tackle the problem was unjust. In the documents there was a little notepaper and it says ‘’may not make resistance’’. The jugde was surprised on a bad way and he makes his verdict. The Guildford-four have proved innocent Gerard "Gerry" Conlon, Paul Michael Hill, Patrick "Paddy" Armstrong and Carole Richardson have got there freedom.
