The narrator in the story “Andy and the Snake” is a first-person narrator in the first 7 lines “Every day he told us about snakes…” “He read me a story from his journal”. Afterwards it becomes a third-person narrator. Our narrator is not an omniscient narrator, but a limited narrator, because the audience only hears the story from Andy’s point of view. We are already told in the beginning of the story, that this is Andy’s story. “ He read me a story from his journal”. Therefore it is his thoughts and feelings we hear about. “Since he was bored, Andy went right to it” “Andy was in a trance, a state he wouldn’t reach again until he started shooting cocaine into his bloodstream, mixing it with just the right amount of LSD”. The narrator is therefore a friend of Andy, possible a good friend or maybe a grandchild, it is hard to tell, because we do not get any specific signs in the story.
The story “Andy and the snake” takes place in a new neighborhood “He had been living in a new neighborhood”, properly a lower middleclass area, because later in the story our main character meets a smaller gang, in which one of them has a small gun. That is not something you would see in a middleclass neighborhood. “Then he went to a car and brought out a little gun”.
