- Red: is the black guy who is serving a life sentence, he becomes friends with andy. he is able to smuggle everything into the prison but also for a price.

Andy: he is the former vice president of a bank in Portland. He was blamed for murdering his wife and her lover. he was really quite at the beginning, but later on he became a librarian in the prison, and also started to offer tax advice to the guards and the inmates. Andy appears neat to the other inmates with blond hair and small hands.

The sisters: they were a gang that would beat the new and weak prisoners. they also messed with Andy at some point.

Byron: He is a prison guard that speaks loudly and use violence against prisoners.

Tommy: He is the guy that served in another prison and had met the guy that had admitted to killing Andy’s wife and her boyfriend.

Not all of them appear at once, we have Red first, then comes Andy, and then the sisters appear and try to bother Andy. so the characters appear one after another.

Andy’s character develop throughout the book, he turns from a quite fellow who didn’t want to be with anyone, and who seemed as not accepting where he was to trying to develop the prisons library, and giving financial advice to the inmates, the guards and the prison’s director himself.
