The American dream is about being 100 percent responsible for your own life. Even if you are a poor American living in a trailer park, you have the basic principle: “I simply haven’t been good enough in my life". It is no one else's fault. A European will likely give other people the responsibility – parents, the community, the school, the ex-wife, the bad employer. In consequence of that acknowledgement, you believe: "If I am doing good enough, if I have a good idea, pull myself together – well, then I will succeed in life." And that is probably the secret of the American dream.Opposite rich Europeans the rich Americans usually don’t have as much guilt. He just tells himself that "I have just been better than you". A rich European will likely think he is rich because the community has helped him, he parents put him in a great school etc. That is why the socialism never has caught the American population - not even the poor part of the population. And why is that:The answer is probably based in the American history. Everybody - except the slaves - came to the country as settlers with almost equal opportunities. Packed their stuff together and traveled westwards with almost no money. The bright and hard working people succeeded, the lazy and stupid did not.Today is obviously different. But a young Bill Gates can still sit in his old garage working on his idea one day - and become the richest man in the world the next day. That is how the American dream works - today. Highly simplified, but one is not in the TV industry for nothing.Torsten
