Analyse af filmen 'East is East'

In the first scene of “East is East”, we're introduced to the children, who are at a Christian parade. Their mother runs up to them, and tells them their father is just up the road watching the parade. The children then promptly run behind a block of houses to hide from their father, indicating there is some secrecy surrounding the children and their father. It is already established here, that the children and their mother are keeping secrets from the father, who would perhaps disapprove of the children's participation in the parade. In the next scene, Nazir flees from his arranged marriage. George, the father, subsequently disowns Nazir, because Nazir has “brought shame on his family”. This indicates that George is the head of the family, and the remaining members of the family must do as he says, or he will become furious.

As the head of family we have George Khan, who is of Pakistani descent. He believes that his children must be brought up to be good Islamic children, who should obey their father and marry well, preferably someone chosen by George. George is also the character who goes through the biggest change. In the end of the movie, when his wife and children rebel against him and his ways, and he realizes what he has done wrong. He finally sees, that his methods have only distanced him from his family, who saw him as a tyran. It is never explicitly stated, but I assume he learns to let his children decide for themselves.
