In the movie “East is East”, the viewer sees a lot of cultural clashes. The main characters are
the Khans, a Pakistani family living in England. The family consists of a Muslim father from
Pakistan, a British mother who is a Caucasian, six sons and one daughter. Throughout the
story, the father tries to make his children follow the Islamic traditions, which he follows
himself. But the children are not willing to do this! In each of their own way, they handle the
rather extraordinary family problems. In the following, I will explain one of the most obvious
culture clashes from the movie.
One of the most obvious clashes during the movie is when the father invites the Shah family
over to plan the future wedding between their two daughters and his own two sons, Tariq and
Maneer. The two Khan boys are not thrilled about the idea, after seeing their own brother
being kicked out of the family when he resisted marrying a Pakistani girl. However, they try
to stay calm and let their parents take care of the talking. It doesn’t take long before Mrs.
Shah expresses her negative attitude about the family’s way of living. Mrs. Khan is not
