I spy is a short story. It takes place in the years of World War 1, which we can see in the text, because it is mentioned, that there are Zeppelins, and they were used in World War 1. Page 93 line 2 “(...)except the “Huns”, the monsters who lurked in Zeppelins in the clouds.”

Charlie Stowe is the principal character in the story. Charlie's father owns a tobacconist shop, and that might be what creates the conflict in the story. First of all because Charlie is sneaking out of his room, and then he is watching what is happening in the shop, and therefore we see it through his eyes, but also because of the two men who is taking Charlie Stowe's father with them. I think it might have something to do with the tobacconist shop.

Charlie Stowe is a 12-year old boy. He gets mocked at his school, because he has never, even though his father owns a tobacconist shop, smoked a cigarette before. Charlie does not seem like the smartest boy at school, and he seems like he has no idea what is really going on in the tobacconist shop, if it is not just because he do not want to realize it. But still he is smart enough to know, that he is not supposed to get his mother, maybe because he knows, that she would not be able to do convince the to men not to take his father with them.
