Australia is one of the oldest lands in the world, and has the sixth biggest country in extent – for example, tree times bigger than Indien.
Australia is sometimes called “the lucky country”. One of the reasons is the wonderful riches under the earth: gold, silver, iron, coal and many precious metals.
South Australia is the driest of all the states, but it does have the Murray River. The river brings greenness and life to the state’s south-east corner.
When the white people first came to Australia, the Aboriginals were living there, in about 600 different groups or tribes. The aboriginals spoke many different languages, and not many of them wear clothes or live in houses. They owned very few things, and they used tools to make things, and the tools were made from stone, wood and bone.
They are perhaps nearly 200,000 Aboriginals alive now, but life is still sad for them, and they are the poorest Australians. Drinking too much alcohol is a problem, and too many of their babies die and too many children never see a doctor.
Australian homes are just a dream to most people in the world. Ninety per cent of them are attractive houses with a garden and a garage. Sixty per cent of Australians own there own homes. Australians enjoy their homes. They spend a lot of time painting and repairing, and use a lot of money to bye modern furniture and deep freeze, hi-fis and saunas.
