Australia is the only country in the world that besides being a country also is a continent all in one. Its geographical placement is on the southern half of the globe. The main areal is only a little smaller than Europe. Even though it has this huge areal, the country only has about 20 million inhabitants. Australia is a country which consists of immigrants from all over the world, but mostly from Europe.
History: the first people ever to walk on Australian soil, is said to be the Indonesians from over 50.000 years ago. The first known European to sail to Australia was the Dutchman Willem Janszoon, who discovered the country in 1606. But it was first in the late in the 17th century that the first real expedition to Australia was made. It was the Englishman James Cook. He sailed overseas in 1770 from England and arrived in a close distance to the now known city called Sydney. He conquered to thirds of the eastern part of the continent and immediately declaimed it English territory. He created prison colonies to the aboriginals and a massive immigration from Europe started. In 1800 the British divided the colonies into six parts. They were named “crown colonies”. In 1823 “New South Wales” was the first colony to get a small kind of independence and in 1855 “New South Wales” created its own constitution. A few years later in 1859 all colonies, or states, was independent except for “Western Australia”. In 1901 Australia was finally declaimed 100% independent, but they were still under English emporium. Australia took part in both world war one and world war two where they were bombed by the Japanese in the last one. Afterwards they changed their foreign politic and allied with USA in both in the Korean and the Vietnam War.
