America is a young and a very patriotic nation, who fought for their independence. The war that was fought included weapons. And had it not been for weapons they may not have gained their freedom. But maybe it is time for Americans to redefine their attitude towards guns and to reinterpret the second amendment.

The Americans create a false sense of security with their weapons, because many people only have them because other people do. It creates a negative mentality of “who will shoot first”. It is important to understand that the American mentality is different from, for example, the Danish one. They think it is freedom to carry a gun or to have one at home, but where is the freedom in fearing that the guy sitting next to you on the bus might have a gun? It is understandable that Americans want to defend themselves, but if they could use a taser-gun it will not hurt people as much. It is a difficult debate and it could be that you have to live in America to really understand how they feel about guns, and of course it is difficult to say that guns are all bad, because people use them for their jobs. The government could make it harder to get firearms, but maybe the Americans would feel weak without their guns as they are the world’s greatest superpower, at the same time the streets would be safer and when Americans claim that it is their right to carry guns because of the second amendment it is the same as saying that they have the same reasons as the militias did back in the 18th century. So do they carry guns so they are able to revolt against the government when needed? That is like saying that America has not really changed. I like to think that we live in a world where we can resolve our issues without guns. We live in 2011 it is time to stop using the second amendment as an argument for carrying weapons just because you can. It is a fact that guns are dangerous and even though the NRA says that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” it would still be better if it was more difficult to get a gun, then we might see that crime rates would fall, or at least the outcome would not be as bad. In a democracy it is better that people get a trial rather than a bullet in the face.
