This essay “Nearing 90” written by William Maxwell is a story that goes through his whole life. This man had a good childhood, where he went to sleigh rides with his mom and dad and he slept between his mom and dad. That was the perfect childhood for a little boy. Everything went well, but one thing he is concerned about is the fact that, when you are dead you do not read books, and he really likes that. “What spoils this pleasant fancy is the recollection that when people are dead they don’t read books. This I finds unbearable.” (ll. 17-18) He tells us about the good things he has experienced, but also the bad experiences in life. In his childhood he went on a steamboat were great many people lost their lives. A scene like that, is one of the scenes he can lay in his bed, thinking about for hours, and then does not get any sleep. This essay goes through a normal childhood, to the time he has got so many experiences with life, and at least he is at that stage where he has grandchildren and he starts looking back at his whole life.
