The American promise, what is the promise? What is the relation between the government and the people? In 2008 when Barack Obama was nominated for president he made a speech, in the speech he was talking about, an American promise and he’s understanding of what the relation between the government and the people was.

I 2008 when Obama holds the speech he said, “It’s a promise that says each of us has the freedom to make of our own lives what we will, but that we also have the obligation to treat each other with dignity and respect” Obama, 2008, II. And that is his understanding of the American promise he gave the people, that everyone has the freedom to live a life of happiness and do what they want with their own life. But they also have to treat each other right, no matter if you’re black or white and they need to have dignity and respect. In the speech, he also mentioned “Ours is a promise that says the government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves – protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education”. The government has this relation to us that it will help us through stuff we can’t deal with. An example of this could be if you’re getting threatened by someone or somebody is blackmailing you, the police and government can help you. However, in the speech the government would also help us with our kids is getting an education and give them a good start in life. Another example of this relationship between the people and the government is “invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.” Obama, 2008, I. Here Obama says what the government also do for us, they are investing in new schools so kids can get this education they need, and they are helping them get to work, and basically, they are making the life better for the American people. Obama said also this in the speech “It’s a promise that says the market should reward drive and innovation and generate growth, but that businesses should live up to their responsibilities to create American jobs, look out for American workers, and play by the rules of the road” Obama, 2008, II. Obama said that the market should achieve something when they are still getting more American in jobs, and inventing new things. But the business also has to live up to the responsibilities to create new jobs so more American’s are in work. However, should the firms play by these rules of the road, which also have a relation to the government, because it is the government who made the rules, so they have to keep this law so they’re not working against the government and then the government will work for the people too.
